Ergonomics in Engineering

'We seem to have passed the era where the need was for more engineering safeguards... What we need now is to capture the human factor.'
(Rimmington, Director General of UK Halth and Safety Executive, 1993).

The poor design of workstations or equipment, or the environment in which they are operated can significantly impact on the quality and speed of performance of the operator and on the likelihood of an operator making an error. The systematic consideration of ergonomics will address these issues. Ideally, consideration of the human should be integrated into the design from the early stages of the design process as this will ensure that performance is maximised. However in circumstances where the human has not been appropriately considered in the design, modifications can be introduced retrospectively if necessary to optimise human performance.

NTTX's established team of human factors consultants have extensive experience in developing Human Factors Integration Plans. We have worked with designers, manufacturers, operating companies, research organisations, government and regulatory bodies and are able to provide clients with guaranteed quality, relevance and value in our support.

Our service is founded on principles that ensure quality, value and practical innovation. The benefits to our customers include: -

  • Operational performance improvement leading to greater efficiency
  • Improved human-machine interface usability
  • Workplaces and systems that are designed with the user in mind
