Human Factors In Safety
Over the years our human factors consultants have often found that the outcome of many company accident investigations involve blaming the individual who was most directly involved for causing the accident. Although it is often easy to blame the individual, this is too simplistic and a human factors approach makes it clear that there are often a number of factors which have contributed to the accident.
Human factors is concerned with all those factors that can influence people and their behaviour. Careful consideration of human factors can improve health and safety by reducing the number of accidents and cases of ill-health at work.
Research by Erik Hollnagel (1993) indicates that 90% of accidents were caused by human error in the 1990s, compared with 25% in the 1960s. He suggests that the recent reliability of technology is partly the explanation for this. Whatever the cause of this rise, it indicates the importance of understanding human factors for managing the safety, reliability and efficiency of systems.
